HOW OUR LAW FIRM IS DIFFERENT

Explaining to you how we’re different requires an explanation of what the “traditional” experience with a lawyer is like. If you’ve worked with a business lawyer to set up your business entity for you, or review an agreement, or establish a trademark, deal with an infringement or an unhappy customer, this will sound familiar.

During the traditional experience, you’ll go in and meet with a lawyer who may make things seem very complicated and confusing. Or, perhaps it will seem super simple. Your lawyer doesn’t ask many questions, but instead just tells you what to do.

You’ll have a good idea that the lawyer is smart and seems to know what she’s doing, so you’ll nod as if you understand everything. Because you want to do the right thing for your business, you’ll have the lawyer prepare a document for you, or review your contract, and you’ll feel relieved that you’ve got “that” taken care of.

You’ll take your fancy planning binder home, stick it on a shelf or in a drawer, mark “incorporation” or “trademark” off on your checklist as done and never think about it again. 

You might remember your lawyer said something about maintaining your corporate records, or updating your trademark, or having your contracts reviewed. But, you’re busy with the business aspect of things — marketing, sales, growing your team, bringing in revenue, building out your business model — and you’ll forget to think about it again.

Until something happens…

A customer complains. Or you have a big dispute with your business partner. Or you see someone on the internet using your content. Or you get a letter in the mail from the IRS or the state tax board. Or the labor department. Or your account is garnished because you overlooked an important letter. Or you have a team member that you didn’t handle quite right when you let him go.

So, you call your lawyer and find out that it will be a $5,000 or $10,000 retainer for him or her to even look at the matter. And she’ll be billing her time against that retainer in six-minute increments.

And now, you’re stuck. You’re in reactive mode. You didn’t maintain your business entity properly. Or you never finished that agreement with your business partner. Or you didn’t document your employee policies properly. Or you didn’t have the right insurance in place to cover you. Or you didn’t have the financial systems set up so you could manage all of this. And, you’ve definitely been overpaying on your taxes.

HOW DO I KNOW ALL THIS?

Because before I started my own law firm, I traveled around the country serving small business owners for a legal consulting firm and I served clients the traditional way that most law firms do and I swore it would never happen to my clients when I started my own law firm.

Unfortunately, what I discovered is the legal industry was not designed to serve growing businesses who experience lots of change on their way to success. It was designed to serve big companies, and online document services and “legal shield” type pre-paid legal services have popped up to serve the smaller companies with less than $5 million of revenue.
